File Submission Guide
- Supply Up-to-date Hard Copy
- The latest Hard Copy, (Lasers, Proofs, Mock-ups..)
provides us with a guide to follow for image content,
placement, verbiage and type styles.
- Supply all Fonts (Printer and Screen)
- Postscript Type One is the preferred font format
- True Type and Multiple Master font can have
inconsistent results when printing.
(reflow, font substitution..)
- Do not stylize font in layout program. For example,
don’t apply Bold, Italic....unless you supply the Bold
and Italic screen and printer font for that type face.
- Naming Consistencies
- Colors should be named consistently throughout
the job. For example, if there is art colorized in
Illustrator "Pantone 485 CVU" and it is used in the
same Quark document that has type colorized
"Pantone 485 CV," Quark will, in effect, separate this
as two different colors.
- Delete any unused colors from your document's
color pallets and any unused items from the pasteboard. If your job
prints 4/c process only, please make sure all spot colors are removed
or turned off - including linked Illustrator files.
- Hairline Rules
- Do not use “Hairline Rules” option. Output resolution
determines Hairline thickness. Therefore, use .25pt
instead of Hairline. This will create more consistent
results when printing.
- Image Requirements
- All images should be supplied as CMYK as
opposed to RGB. The data in a RGB image, which
is saved as a 24 bit file, has a color gamut of
16.7 million colors. The CMYK color gamut of the
same image is considerably smaller, containing only
Several Hundred Thousand colors. Simply put,
CMYK can not reproduce every color that RGB can.
Therefore, it is advisable to convert your images to
CMYK BEFORE color correcting them and running
color lasers.
- Final image resolution for CMYK and Grayscale
images should be at least 150 dots per inch (dpi).
The key word here is "Final." For example, if you
have an image that is 300 dpi in Photoshop, you
might think that is high enough resolution, but if you
place that image in Quark at 200%, the “Final”
resolution is cut in half to 150 dpi.
- Final image resolution for Bitmap images should
be 1200 dpi.
- When supplying images saved with "Clipping
Paths”, save them as “eps” and not “tiff” files.
- Density for all images should not be more than
320%. This means that in the darkest shadows of
an image, the sum of all color percentages should
not equal more than 320%. Any higher density, is
likely to cause more time on press. To adjust this
setting in PhotoShop, go to the ‘File’ menu, scroll
down to ‘Color Settings’ then click on ‘CMYK Setup’
in PhotoShop 5.5 or click on ‘Separation Setup’ in
PhotoShop 4.0. Adjust maximum density by using
the ‘Total Ink Limit:’ box. This should be done
BEFORE converting to CMYK.
